Rachel Hansen Syme

SymeRachelRachel Hansen Syme, 96 of Fountain Green, Utah returned to her Heavenly Father and her loving husband December 30, 2017 at Central Valley Medical Center in Nephi, Utah.
Rachel was born May 3, 1921 in Fountain Green, Utah. She was the 5th child born to Hyrum N. Hansen and Alice Ostler Hansen. At the tender age of 3, her mother passed away after delivering twin daughters, Dora and Doris.
Rachel was raised by her father, older brothers, sisters, and aunts, but mostly by her Aunt Nellie Aagard.
Rachel married Eugene Theron Syme in 1938. They had 3 children: Helen, Morris, and Ronald. She was a helpmate to her husband, always ready to go for machinery parts, weigh hay or coal for Syme’s Coal and Feed, and run their paint and appliance store. Later on, she provided work for many of the young people in town.
She was “Aunt Rachel” to many children in Fountain Green, Grandma Rachel to 6 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, and 15 great-great grandchildren, but she was called “Grandma Rachel” by many more children in Ftn. Green. Many of them, after school, would stop to get their cookie before going home.
Rachel worked in nearly every organization of the church, but her favorite was Primary. She was a teacher in Young Women’s, and in the Relief Society Presidency twice. She was a temple worker for many years. She was an active member of the DUP, and belonged to the Red Hat Club. Rachel taught reading to many older members of the community. Rachel also enjoyed teaching 4-H. In 1993 she was named Citizen of the Year in Fountain Green.
Rachel worked to help others wherever she could, from tending kids and grandkids to taking care of older people who needed help. She brought the first Doctor’s office into Fountain Green and was a board member of the Juab County Hospital, helping to gain funding for the new hospital now called Central Valley Medical Center. She was named Citizen of the Year in 1993.
Rachel had the opportunity to travel to many places including a temple tour in the South Pacific Islands. She was wealthy in the amount of friends and people who loved her.
Rachel is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Helen and Dan Naylor, 6 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and 9 great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene Thereon Syme, 2 sons, Morris and Ron, 1 granddaughter, Leslie Syme Gustamantes, and 1 great-grandson, Tyson Daniel Naylor.
Her funeral will be held Thursday, Jan. 4, 2018 at 11:00 am at the Fountain Green LDS ward church with a viewing Wednesday evening from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm. and one hour prior to the services, also at the Fountain Green LDS ward church on 100 South and 200 East. Burial will be in the Fountain Green City Cemetery, Fountain Green, Utah.
