Bruce Harless, our husband, father, grandfather, friend and confidante died on April 17th, 2012 at Utah Valley Hospital in Provo, Utah. He leaves behind his beloved wife Marlane, who he married October 6th, 1953 in the Salt Lake Temple.
Bruce was born in Phoenix, Arizona to wonderful parents who were education oriented. He received his early education in various parts of the state. As a youngster he picked cotton in the hot desert sun, harvested carrots and had a paper route. He excelled academically and was active in sports – football, basketball, baseball and tennis. He loved scouting, achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, and through the years has served in scouting on the local unit, district and council levels.
At a very early age he determined he wanted to be a medical doctor and the course was set – he never wavered. He was accepted at Stanford University in 1956 where he received his bachelor and medical degree in 1960, followed by an internship at Santa Clara County Hospital, San Jose, California, and a general practice residency at Sonoma County Hospital in Santa Rosa, California.
He established a medical practice in Mesa, Arizona in 1963 and just when everything was going well and good, Uncle Sam beckoned and he was drafted into the army. Following one year as division artillery surgeon he served for two years as the medical advisor to the American Embassy at Bonn, Germany and upon leaving was cited “for his unparalleled efforts and success in raising the level of the medical services to the American community and for his personal dedication to the achievement of the highest professional standard”. At that time he was also awarded the Army Commendation Medal for “Meritorious Service in Europe”, with citation. In 1969 he was honorably discharged with the rank of Major.
Returning to the States, the family settled in Mt. Pleasant in 1970, once again establishing a private practice. Following a serious illness in the early 1980s it became necessary to close the private practice and a position was accepted as Clinical Director for Central Utah Mental Health and Substance Abuse Center. Upon retirement in July 1998, the new Behavioral Healthcare Facility in Ephraim was named in his honor.
Perhaps the plaque on the wall of the Behavioral Healthcare Facility says it best of all: “This building is named in honor of Dr. J. Bruce Harless for his many years of selfless care and compassionate service to those in need. Dr. Harless has been singular in his dedication to improve the lot of the people he has served and to ease the suffering of those less fortunate”.
Over the years he has belonged to many medical societies, served on the Sanpete Valley Hospital Board and as chief of the medical staff. With regard to the practice of medicine and surgery, he has felt that if he had any major strength at all, it would have been in trying always to communicate to each patient his personal concern, and helping them understand the illness and what needed to be done for treatment.
A life-long member of the LDS Church, he served a 2 ½ year mission in the East German Mission, served twice as Bishop and as Stake President. He and Marlane were called as ordinance workers at the Manti Temple shortly after retiring. Then Bruce served as a Sealer and finally they were called as President and Matron of the Manti Temple from 2006 to 2009. Their fervent prayer was to have the health to finish this call. The prayer was answered, but two weeks following their release Bruce encountered serious health problems leading to open-heart surgery.
Bruce enjoyed a beautiful sunrise or sunset, a view from a high mountain peak, and watching the seedlings emerge from his garden in the spring, family history and anything that has wings and flies. He had a firm and abiding testimony in the gospel of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and a deep love for our country.
In reality, however, when all is said and done, he readily acknowledges the greatest accomplishment of all was in marrying his wonderful wife, Marlane. His real treasure consists of their four daughters with sons-in-law, and nine grandchildren
Bruce is preceded in death by his parents and two brothers. He is survived by his wife, four daughters Susan (Ralph Brothersen), Shari (Randal Thatcher), Ann (Lance Bushnell) and Allison (Joe Larson), nine grandchildren and two sisters, Yvonne (Darrel Cheney) and Julie (Richard Eggleston).
Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 21st at 11:00am at the Mount Pleasant Utah North Stake Center, 461 North 300 West. Viewings on Friday, April 20th, 6:00 – 8:00pm at Rasmussen Mortuary, 96 North 100 West, Mount Pleasant, Utah (435) 462-2427 or Saturday, 9:30 – 11:30am. Interment in the Mt. Pleasant City Cemetery. He was a fifth generation Huntsman, born in Fillmore UT, to George R. and Chlora Lewis Huntsman on April 13, 1929. He graduated from Millard High School in ‘47 where he excelled in basketball, tennis and track and was Senior Class President. He attended the University of Utah as a pre-med student, but wanted to fly. He enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1949. He served in Strategic Air Command (SAC) and Air Defense Command. He was stationed at Pepperell AFB, Newfoundland; Stewart AFB, NY; Ent AFB, Colorado Springs; Eglin AFB, Florida; Thule AFB, Greenland; Hamilton AFB, CA; and Tyndall AFB, FL. He embarked on dangerous missions for our country all over the world, intermingling with the locals, from Eskimos to Indies, and trying to understand their cultures. At one time Dwight had more hours of Arctic flying than any other Air Force pilot. This arctic flying took him to remote sites with primitive navigational aids, sometimes in marginal weather, requiring exceptional pilot skills. He served honorably in the United States Air Force, retiring in 1976 as a Lt. Col with a command pilot aeronautical rating.
Dwight was married to JoAnne Richardson of Gonzales, TX in 1950. Their children are; Clayton Dwight (Pattie), Valori, and Candi Diebel (Larry). He married Sylvia Snuffer in 1966 and became a father to her two sons Paul Rolland Tikalsky and Alan Dale Tikalsky. Together they have 11 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Lewis Knox Huntsman (Judy) and was preceded in death by brothers Ross and Byron.
After retiring Dwight and Sylvia built their home in Fillmore and he continued to pursue his love of hunting, fishing, and tennis, which he played on his own court. He was a skilled pianist and a 32nd Degree Mason. He and Sylvia made many trips in their RV, eventually bringing them to Happy Trails, AZ, their winter residence for 10 years. He was an avid golfer, playing daily into his eighties. He was renowned for the “seventh hole sip” and for his unquenchable sense of humor, which never left him. He was enthusiastic about life, living it to the fullest, and wanted that happiness for everyone else.. His motto was “Have fun.” He had a host of well-used jokes which sparked laughter among family and friends.
In keeping with his service to our country and former pre-med studies, his body is being donated to Science Care for medical research and education. The family wishes to express its deep appreciation to Intermountain Hospice in Fillmore and to Hospice of the Valley in AZ for their caring, compassionate service.
Dwight would be honored to have donations made in his name to Huntsman Cancer Foundation, 500 Huntsman Way., Salt Lake City, UT 84108. Dwight loved being called the Patriarch of the Huntsman family. Memorial service Friday April 13, 2012 at 1:00 pm in the American Legion Hall in 80 South Main in Fillmore, UT under the care of Rasmussen Mortuary of Fillmore.

She was surrounded by loving family, including all her children, as she passed from this life. She will be missed, but she faced death the same way she faced life, with courage and faith.
Lauretta was born October 3, 1938 in Longview, Washington to Ronald and Hilma Eugenia Johnstun Young, the third of five daughters. She spent her early years across the river in Rainier, Oregon, graduating from Rainier High School in 1956. Throughout high school, Lauretta was actively involved in gymnastics and basketball, and her mother and sisters were some of the original members of the Rainier Branch of the LDS Church. After graduation, Lauretta’s Branch President encouraged her to attend Brigham Young University in Provo. While at BYU, she met her eternal companion, Jay Sheldon Monsen. Recently discharged from the army, Jay was immediately smitten with her beauty and grace. They were married March 9, 1957 for time and eternity in the Manti Temple. In March, they celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary.

Lauretta served faithfully all her life in the Church. She had a tender heart for children, and she loved serving in the Primary, including as the Primary President in three different wards. She also served as a Relief Society President and teacher. Lauretta and Jay served faithfully together in the Manti Temple.

Family has always been the focus of her life. Every child and grandchild felt they were her favorite. She had a special gift with children, animals, and flowers. Lauretta’s great love for her family prevailed, as she stayed conscious until her last child arrived from New York, and she bid everyone a personal good-bye before passing through the veil.

Lauretta leaves behind her husband, Jay of Mt. Pleasant, Utah. She is survived by her children: Sheldon Ronald and Debbie Miller Monsen of Richfield Utah; Jaye Lynn and Mark Robison of Provo, Utah; David Evans and Shellie Moore Monsen of Orem , Utah; Lauri Ann and Ken Grier of Macedon, New York; James William and Karen Cresswell Monsen of Payson, Utah; Joseph Paul and Luciana Rodrigues Monsen of Orem, Utah; and Jeanne and Ramon Elias Tejada of Mt. Pleasant, Utah. She is also survived by 36 Grandchildren and 14 Great Grandchildren, and all four of her sisters , including Jean Nelson of Clark Fork, Idaho, Margaret (Don) Stewart of Kanab Utah, Rosemary (Bryan) Wade of Clark Fork, Idaho, and Hazel (John) Sanders of Rainier, Oregon.

Preceded in death by her parents, and one grandson Sheldon Richard Monsen.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 11, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. in Mt. Pleasant, Utah under the direction of Bishop Stallings of the Mt. Pleasant 3rd Ward (295 South State, Mt. Pleasant, Utah). There will be a viewing at the Church one hour before the funeral, as well as Tuesday night, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Rasmussen Funeral Home at (96 N 100W, Mt. Pleasant Utah).
