Edward Edwin Thoms

Edward Edwin Thoms passed away on December 25, 2020 at the Sanpete Valley Hospital. Ed was born on May 4, 1935 in Hamtramck, Michigan to Edward Francis and Marie Teltow Thoms. He was the youngest of 3 children. Ed loved baseball and played as often as he could, playing in multiple leagues and pick-up games with his brother and teammates. He joined the Marines during the Korean War and became an aerial photographer while also being selected to play baseball on the Air Force traveling squad. After the war, he returned to Michigan and attended Michigan State University.
Ed later moved to Las Vegas and, while working at the Horseshoe Casino as a dealer, met Naomi Jensen who he would marry on March 10, 1962. Ed then worked at the Nevada Test Site, witnessing several historic above ground detonations. The couple next moved to Los Angeles, CA where they welcomed their first child, Ann Marie. Ed took a job in sales to support his young family and found he was quite good at it. They soon moved back to Michigan to be closer to Ed’s family and had their second child, Dale Edward. By this time Ed’s career as a computer salesman was taking off and he was offered the chance to open a new office in Grand Rapids, MI. The family soon found a home they loved in Middleville, MI and remained there for 18 years. Ed was able to share his lifelong love of baseball by coaching his son’s little league team to four consecutive championships. Little League became a whole family activity, Ed coaching, Dale playing, Ann Marie keeping score and Naomi cheering. Ed was heavily involved in the LDS church during this time, becoming Branch President among other roles.
In 1992, Ed and Naomi moved to Naomi’s hometown of Fairview, Utah, where they bought a former Bishop’s Storehouse and continued renovating it into a cozy home. They lived in Fairview for the next 15 years while spending winters in Arizona. They then spent a few years in Colorado, closer to their son, before moving back to Utah where their daughter now lives.
Ed found humor in the tiniest things and his quick wit kept his family laughing. His ready smile and great kindness made him a friend to all. Patience was a virtue he had in abundance and it showed in his treatment of family, friends and acquaintances. He shared his love of golf with his son and taught his granddaughter to play as well. He also enjoyed taking road trips and playing games with his family and solving crossword puzzles. He took long walks daily at such a quick pace that some family members struggled to keep up with him even into his eighties. He lived life with joy and set a great example for all. He will be greatly missed.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Erwin. His is survived by his wife, Naomi, his daughter Ann Marie Thoms Howard (David) and son Dale Edward Thoms, his sister Geraldine Marie Thoms Nelson (Stanley) and three grandchildren, Nicolette Marie Kelson Thomas (Clifford), Dallin Jay Kelson (Anna Maria) and Paul Kelson.
A viewing will be held Saturday, January 2nd at Rasmussen Mortuary in Mt. Pleasant, 11am-noon, followed by an informal service noon to 12:30pm. Interment with military honors will be held at Fairview Cemetery at 1pm. Online condolences at rasmussenmortuary.comT
