Gary Kent Olsen

Gary Kent Olsen was born January 20, 1940, to Eldred LeRay and Helen (Peterson) Olsen in Sterling, Utah. He passed away peacefully on the night of May 27, 2022, surrounded by family and his loyal four-legged companion (BUD) at his daughter’s home.
Gary grew up and lived in Sterling until he was drafted at the age of 18 into the US Army. He was sent and stationed in Hanau, Germany and called it home for the next 4 years. He grew to love (chocolate) Germany but was happy to return home to Sterling and his family after his service had ended. In 1976, he met and married Carole Kyser Rigby and became an instant father to her daughter Lorrie. After raising their daughter, he moved to Price to work at the Carbon County Club as their maintenance equipment guy and lived there until he retired. Once retired, he moved back home to Sterling where he spent his days gardening, tinkering in his shop, and drawing again.
Gary loved to spend time in the mountains as a youth and that passion continued throughout his life. He shared lots of wonderful stories and memories about 9 Mile canyon. Gary was a God-fearing man and had a wonderful relationship with God. He was a quiet, hardworking, and dog loving man. He was a very selfless and generous man that gave even when he had little to give. He had the biggest HEART as he was always willing to help others. Gary loved his family and did all he could to help when needed. He was a mechanic by trade and enjoyed reading and taking courses to learn new things throughout his life. He even taught himself how to draw and later took art lessons. He was a gentle giant that loved quietly but deeply.
He is survived by his daughter Lorrie (DeLane) Vaughn, granddaughter Ashley (Jack) Waters, grandson Tyler (Tasha) Abegglen, nieces Christina (Mike) Stewart, Paula (Cody) Cook, nephews David Olsen, Travis Christensen and Jim Christensen, great grandchildren Maddox, Tuckett and Wren Waters and Sloan Abegglen, great niece Ali (Marc) Prigmore, and great nephews Kort (Ashley) Frischknecht, Jacob Stewart, Dawson Cook, and Bryson Cook. He is preceded in death by his wife Carole K. Olsen, parents Eldred LeRay & Helen (Peterson) Olsen, brothers Deon Olsen and Lynn Olsen, sister Linda Christensen, and grandparents and many other family members.
