Julia Barkdull Jackson, 93, loving mother and grandmother, passed away peacefully in her long time Mapleton home on February 6, 2025. She is now reunited with her stubborn husband, John, who passed away just 11 months prior.
Julia was known to most everyone as “Grandma”. It didn’t matter if you were family or friend, she loved to be called grandma. She loved to show off her baking skills by making her delicious cinnamon rolls. She seemed to get a kick out of watching her kids fight over the coveted rolls. Sometimes it even escalated to the point that the boys were stealing and hiding them from each other. Grandma was known for her biscuits that nobody has seemed to be able to re-create. Grandma was famous around town for the rice balls she made each Halloween. Many people went out of their way to trick or treat at grandmas just to load up on rice balls.
Grandma loved living in Mapleton and the dear friends she and grandpa were able to have for so many years. Having Lynn and June Houtz right across the street, or Carol and Carwin Watts and Roland and Sharon Lewis coming over for Uno and domino games, were highlights for grandma. If you tried to leave her house she’d tell you “there’s no need to rush off”. Grandma was truly blessed to have so many friends in her life. She loved them all dearly.
Grandma grew up in Meadow (Utah) where she was the 7th daughter in the Barkdull family. Being one of those “Meadow Creek” girls eventually led her to cross paths with her life long partner, John. The two married in 1947 and briefly lived in Millard County, Nevada, Provo, and Springville before settling in their forever home on Maple Street in Mapleton.
Being a mother and grandma was her favorite calling in life, but she also had the opportunity to hold a few jobs that she enjoyed. Working at The Little Acorn, the sewing plant, and with kids as a substitute teacher, grandma loved everyone she came in contact with. Grandma was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Later Day Saints and lived her life as a true example of faith, charity, and love. Grandma and grandpa were sealed for time and eternity in the Provo temple in 1976.
Grandma had immense pride for her family. Her three boys and a daughter were the pride of her life. Watching her three boys all serve honorably in the military was something grandma beamed with pride over. Her daughter right across the lawn was there for all her needs and grandma knew she could count on her for anything. Grandma was able to watch her children all grow through life and raise unbelievable families of their own. All the grandkids knew the phone would ring on their birthdays to grandma singing happy birthday to all of them.
Grandma is survived by her four children, Cleve (Ann) Jackson of Spanish Fork, Wayne (Paula) Jackson of Fillmore, Mick (Lila) Jackson of Fillmore, and Teri (Rex) Pinnell of Mapleton. Sister in law Nancy Jackson of Henderson, Nevada, brother in law Merlin Jackson of Spanish Fork, sister in law Tonie Barkdull of Fillmore, 23 grandkids, 46 great grandkids, and four great great grandkids. But in her mind she had over 300 grandkids because every person that walked through her door was treated as they were her own. Grandma was preceded in death by her husband, John, her parents Howard Nicholas and Minerva Barkdull, all 8 of her brothers and sisters, daughter in law Jodie Jackson, and grandchildren Alonna Johnson, Codey and Kelley Montague, Michael Jones, and Tiffany Jackson.
