Melville LeRoy Tomkinson, (Roy), 92, returned to his Heavenly Father on Wednesday, August 15, 2018 in the Fillmore Hospital. Roy was born November 30, 1925 to Melville Alexander and Nona Call Tomkinson on the family farm in Flowell, UT where he learned to work hard, be dependable and get along with what he had.
Roy graduated from Millard High School in 1944 and was drafted into the Army where he served in the Phillipines and Guam. He married his sweetheart, Gloria Swallow in the Manti Temple November 30, 1948.
Roy served in the community as County Assessor, Fillmore City Treasurer, member of the Jeep Posse, and Water Master after he helped establish the Fillmore Water Users Association. He owned and operated Tomkinson Distributing in Millard County for many years—delivering Meadow Gold, Wonder Bread, Hostess and Clover Club products. He was active in the LDS church his whole life. He received the Silver Beaver award for his dedicated service to the Boy Scouts of America both as Scout Master and on a District Level. Roy and Gloria served in the Manti Temple for 24 years, the last 16 of which Roy was a Sealer. Roy & Gloria served an 18 month mission in Cape Town, South Africa. Roy served as a Family History Consultant for many years and loved finding names of relatives and doing their temple work. Roy sealed many of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, which was a highlight of his life.
Roy is survived by his eternal sweetheart, Gloria, Larry (Janice)–Provo, Wanda (Del) Despain–Hurricane, Dan (Carole)–Orem, Maria (Robert) Reidhead–Fillmore, Michael (Linda)–West Jordan, 25 grandchildren and 63 great grand children. Their family tree boasts 123 with 2 more on the way! Also survived by his brother, Don (Ilena)–Hurricane. Preceeded in death by his parents; brothers Howard, Max and Fred Tomkinson; sister Remola Tomkinson; son Doyle Roy Tomkinson; daughter-in-law Terry Tomkinson.
Funeral services will be held at the Fillmore First/Fourth Ward Church (250 E 500 S). Viewings Friday, August 24 6:00-8:00 p.m. And Saturday, August 25 10:00-11:30. Funeral will be at 12:00 noon under the direction of Rasmussen Mortuary. Internment will be at the Fillmore City Cemetery with military rites provided by the American Legion and Utah National Guard.
The family would like to express gratitude to all the Doctors, Nurses, Hospice and Staff at the Fillmore Clinic and Hospital for all the kindness and loving care provided through the years, and especially the last 2 weeks. He loved you all so much.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the General Missionary Fund of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
